The Bridge That Karma Cola Built

Just a year after we made the first bottle of Karma Cola sales of the drink have enabled the construction of a bridge in Boma, Sierra Leone where the name ingredient comes from. This little film was made when we visited the people in Boma to check out the bridge that Karma Cola built.

Every day the world consumes more than 1.7 billion cola drinks. Not many, if any, of these contain the name ingredient; cola. These days cola is a flavour that can be made in a laboratory.

Originally cola flavour came from the cola nut discovered in West Africa where it is still used socially and in religious rituals. Ironically the Mende people, who grow and harvest cola nut, have  a saying that sounds a lot like an advertising jingle ‘he who brings cola, brings life’. They’ve been saying this for thousands of years.

When we began thinking about making food and drink that would benefit the people who grow the ingredients, the land and the people who consume them we thought a bit about karma and the concept of cause and effect. Karma Cola sounded like a great name for a drink made with fairly traded, organic ingredients so we searched to find out more about cola and the people who traditionally grow harvest the nuts.

That search led us all the way to Boma in Sierra Leone and introduced us to a host of wonderful people. Those places and people are in this video. What goes around comes around.
